Province Maintains Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing for Abbotsford

ABBOTSFORD –
The provincial government is providing more than $1 million in Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing to the City of Abbotsford.

“This government is proud to have established the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing program in 2004 and we are pleased to continue providing this money to local governments,” says Abbotsford South MLA John van Dongen. “Giving this money back to the city so that they can deliver on community safety initiatives is a great benefit of this partnership.”

“A million dollars in revenue from traffic fines this year will be very helpful to our community and will, I am certain, be put to excellent use by the City in making Abbotsford a safer place,” says Abbotsford West MLA Michael de Jong.

“We need to give our local law enforcement and municipal government as much help as we can right now,” says Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes. “As we address the need to fight crime as well help local governments deliver essential services during challenging economic times the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing is a very important program.”

The City of Abbotsford will receive $1,226,763 in Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing. This is the second instalment in support of public safety initiatives and local government operations.

Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing Program is part of the Strategic Community Investment Fund a two-year, $232-million initiative also including the Small Community and Regional District Grants. Communities received a first payment in spring 2009 and will receive a third payment in early 2010.

Through the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing Program, the province has provided 100 per cent of net traffic fine revenues to local government since 2004.  Traffic fine revenue comes from fines on violation tickets, with a municipality receiving an amount based on its contribution to total municipal policing costs. The Small Community and Regional District Grant allocation is calculated based on population and assessment.
