Flood Protection Funding will Improve Safety in Mission

MISSION –Mission farms and homes will be safer thanks to $320,000 in provincial flood protection funding which will go to the Dewdney Area Improvement District. Work will include removing sediment from the mouth of Legace Creek, and deepening and widening an existing 3.4 kilometre channel on the east side of Hatzic Lake.

Why this matters:

  • Flooding in the Hatzic Valley costs the local agriculture industry approximately $2 million per year.
  • This funding will help mitigate the threat of flooding to homes and farms in the area.

Quote:

"This funding will help reduce the risk of flooding in the Hatzic Prairie region and is a great step toward restoring Hatzic Lake as a prime recreational area," says Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes.

Additional information:

The Dewdney Area Improvement District is responsible for one-third of the total project costs, estimated at more than $474,000. The project is expected to be completed by February 2014 and will be funded by the British Columbia Flood Protection Program. Under this program, announced in 2007, the Province will invest $100 million over 10 years for flood protection infrastructure and maintenance across British Columbia.
